The Galen Marek Disrespect Thread
Welcome to the Galen Marek disrespect thread, a place where, as you guessed, we will cover why Vader's apprentice was useless. Without further ado, let's get right into it.
Backstory
Failen Marek was born on Kashyyyk. He was the son of the Jedi Knight, Kento Marek.
The Force Unleashed wrote:"His full name was Galen Marek," Bail Organa had announced after a lengthy search of Imperial records. "His father, Kento, was a Jedi Knight who lived for ten years among the Wookiees. Galen was born there."
Kento was so useless that he was ragdolled by Vader, which proves that he's massively sub Jinn fodder.
- Spoiler:
As we will see later on, Failen inherited his fathers sub Jinnness.
The Fodder Unleashed
Failen fought PROXY who was using a Kenobi training module. PROXY landed a hit on his sleeve and almost cut his arm off.
The Force Unleashed wrote:Kenobi slashed a new rip in the sleeve of the apprentice's combat suit with a move that would have taken his arm off at the elbow had he not moved in time.
PROXY knocked Failen to the ground with a punch and made him bleed.
- Spoiler:
Failen's lightning hardly damages PROXY.
- Spoiler:
This is embarrassing considering Darth Chratis decimated a large number of hex droids with his lightning.
The Old Republic: Fatal Alliance wrote:Force lightning spread through them in waves, breaking the mass into manageable parts.
It's also embarrassing since Exal Kressh could tear apart lightsabers with her lightning.
- Spoiler:
Failen's lightning was so pathetic that even Rahm Kota, a fodder Jedi, didn't take it seriously.
The Force Unleashed wrote:He raised his left hand and with the power of the dark side unleashed a bolt of Sith lightning at the renegade Jedi. Kota only laughed.
Failen gets stalemated by Kota in a lightning contest.
The Force Unleashed wrote:Raising his left hand in a move that was a mirror image of the apprentice's own, he sent the lightning arcing back to its source. The energy struck both of them, hurling them apart.
Yet again, Failen gets stalemated by Kota in a force contest.
The Force Unleashed wrote:Again, however, Kota deflected his Force energies back at him. Again they were pushed apart.
Failen doubts whether or not he can beat Kota.
The Force Unleashed wrote:Kota wouldn't beat him, but could he beat Kota?
Kota sends Failen flying with a force push.
- Spoiler:
Failen's lightning hardly does any damage to Kota.
- Spoiler:
Darth Nyriss had lightning that was powerful enough to disintegrate force users (more powerful than Kota) instantly.
The Old Republic: Revan wrote:A dozen bolts of lightning sprang from Nyriss’s hand, arcing across the room to incinerate her enemies. Instead of leaping back into the cell to avoid the deadly attack, Revan stepped forward to intercept it.
Both hands were held in front of him, his arms fully extended at shoulder height, his thumbs touching and his fingers splayed wide. He drew the bolts of lightning into his waiting grasp, channeling them away from their intended targets and absorbing their power.
“I am Revan reborn,” he said to Nyriss. “And before me you are nothing.”
Nyriss’s eyes went wide as Revan unleashed the power of her own attack against her. She tried to throw up another Force shield, but the bolts ripped it apart and continued on unabated. The lightning engulfed her, the intense heat consuming her instantly, leaving only a pile of charred ash.
Vitiate while pre-prime one-shotted the Dark Council in a flash.
The Old Republic encyclopaedia wrote:but when they gathered on the steps of the Imperial Citadel in order to confront the Emperor, all eleven died instantly in a flash of light
Even Kopecz quickly killed a Jedi amped by battle meditation with his lightning.
Darth Bane: Path of Destruction wrote:He unleashed it in a storm of electricity, bolts of blue-violet lightning ripping through the flesh of his unfortunate victim. The Selkath's body danced in convulsions of agony until his smoking corpse finally collapsed to the floor.
Vader admitted Kazdan Paratus is far more powerful than Failen and that he does not expect him to survive his battle against him. Having parity with fodder is becoming a trend for him.
The Force Unleashed wrote:Kazdan Paratus is far more powerful than you," the black-masked figure said, filling her with apprehension. "I do not expect you to survive.
Vader currently doesn't deem Failen powerful enough to help him overthrow Palpatine.
The Force Unleashed wrote:But should you succeed, you will be one step closer to your destiny."
This is embarrassing for Failen as Vader believed Karness Muur could help him overthrow Palpatine.
- Spoiler:
Karness Muur is sub Ajunta Pall. Ajunta Pall in turn is sub Malak due to him describing the Star Maps as 'blinding', yet Failen is still weaker than him.
Book of the Sith wrote:Ajunta Pall beheaded their ruler, Hakagram Graush, and claimed the throne as the blood heir to the ancestral King Adas -- and we became his Shadow Hands.
Knights of the Old Republic wrote:"So much power... it is blinding"
Failen could hardly sense Kazdan Paratus when nearby him.
The Force Unleashed wrote:As he walked cautiously forward, feeling the nearness of Kazdan Paratus but uncertain of his exact location
Darth Nihilus could sense Meetra Surik from across the galaxy, even when she tried hiding her presence.
Knights of the Old Republic II wrote:"Ah, you are here. You felt it, did you not?"
"It was Visas' Master - he can feel my presence in the Force."
"The time to hide your presence is coming to a close, and you will need to increase your training."
Paratus landed a hit on Failen.
The Force Unleashed wrote:The pike left a shallow cut down his left forearm before he could repulse the strange creature's attack.
Paratus outpaces Failen
The Force Unleashed wrote:As fast as he lunged or retreated, the mechanical legs outpaced him.
It turns out Vader was right after all. It was only after the deaths of the Jedi mannequins Paratus thought were real in which Failen gained the upper hand as he caught Paratus in a force grip whilst he was mourning their deaths.
The Force Unleashed wrote:Kazdan Paratus moaned as each junk Master fell, mourning them as though they were actually alive. When the last one went down, he was actually weeping. The apprentice reached out and caught the Jedi Aleena in a light Force grip.
After the defeat of Kazdan Paratus, Vader still doesn't deem Failen powerful enough to help him overthrow Palpatine.
This also confirms Shaak Ti > Kazdan Paratus which makes Failen's inferiority to Paratus even more embarrassing. The Force Unleashed wrote:"You have defeated a tired old man and an outcast." Anger cracked like a whip in Darth Vader's vocoderized voice. "You will not be ready to face the Emperor until you have faced a true Jedi Master."
Prime Shaak Ti struggles against magnaguards.
The same magnaguards that got absolutely cucked by Maul
- Spoiler:
While on his way to fight Shaak Ti, Failen gets cucked by one of Felucia's inhabitants.
- Spoiler:
Failen attempts to throw a mushroom at Shaak Ti while she's meditating. Ti flicks it away with no effort.
The Force Unleashed wrote:He didn't believe that for a second. With a flick of one wrist, he ripped a mushroom out of the sarlacc's skin and threw it at her head. She flicked it away with the Force, barely moving an eyebrow.
Failen fails to influence the Sarlacc to lash out at Ti.
The Force Unleashed wrote:He smiled, letting anger fuel his hatred for her and for all that the Jedi represented. With the dark side behind him, he reached out for the mind of the sarlacc and goaded it to lash out at her. All the creature did was roar. It resisted him, he realized, with her help.
Ti messes up Failen's balance with her first strike.
The Force Unleashed wrote:The apprentice simultaneously backflipped and blocked her opening blow. The force of it surprised him, and the recoil threw him backward. His hood caught on one of the sarlacc's teeth, and he tore it impatiently away before the snag could interfere with his defense. Shaak Ti's lightsaber was a jagged blue blur between them. He blocked her as best he could until he had his balance again.
Failen could barely block all of Ti's blows.
The Force Unleashed wrote:driving him back down with a series of blows so rapid he barely caught them all.
Yet another blow from Ti that Failen barely blocks.
The Force Unleashed wrote:She paused to aim a blow at his head that he barely deflected.
Ti force pushes Failen and hits him with Kinetite after.
- Spoiler:
Shaak Ti lands 2 strikes on Failen and almost blinded him with the third one had he not barely blocked it
The Force Unleashed wrote:On her last three words, she struck three blows that each partially found their mark. The first burned a sizzling line down the apprentice's left shoulder. The second scored diagonally across his chest. The third would have skewered his right eye had he not held her back at the last minute with a desperate telekinetic block that stopped her lightsaber barely a millimeter from his skin.
Ti only ended up losing due to getting unlucky and walking into Failen's lightsaber. Failen even admits he was lucky and that he was close to defeat.
Once again, Vader was right. The magnaguards gave Ti a better fight. How one fight can have this many anti-feats is beyond me.The Force Unleashed wrote:She gasped and staggered backward. Her lightsaber and her gaze dropped. A full half meter of red blade emerged from her stomach, then the rest came free with a hiss. He backed away, shocked by how close he had come to death and how lucky he had been to defeat her
Failen can't even stand up after being stabbed through the chest by Vader
- Spoiler:
Krayt got stabbed and was still able to resist lightning from Celeste Morne amped by Karness Muur after.
- Spoiler:
And Krayt was already damaged enough by his Vong implants...
Failen blasts a Mandalorian with force lightning and it does minimal damage. The Mandalorian doesn't end up charred, not even smoke is emitted from its corpse.
Darth Nyriss was able to casually char 2 guards with her lightning
The Old Republic: Revan wrote:"A burst of purple lightning arced down the steps, catching both men in the chest. They barely had time to scream before they were turned into charred and smoking husks."
Even some random frog is able to char someone with his lightning yet Failen is too weak to.
- Spoiler:
Failen struggles to fight a shadow guard.
- Spoiler:
The shadow guards are even weaker than Ventress, pre-prime Mara Jade and Inquisitor Valin.
Starships and Vehicles Collection #63 wrote:None would be trained sufficiently to be a threat to Darth Bane's insistence that there only be two Sith, nor would they be a threat to Darth Sidious or his apprentice Darth Vader. The most powerful of these agents were 'only' Sith adepts but would appear to be almost as dark Jedi - the likes of Asajj Ventress, Mara Jade or Inquisitor Valin (in fact a fallen Jedi). The lesser agents were reduced to still-deadly faceless minions. Amongst their ranks were the Shadow Guard.
Failen barely survived being ambushed by giant spiders.
The Force Unleashed wrote:WITH ONE DESPERATE LUNGE OF his lightsaber, the apprentice killed the last of the giant spiders that had ambushed him in the forest's lower levels. Hideous creatures with fat, red-pigmented bodies and tenacity beyond all reason-he almost wondered if they saw his potential escape as a personal affront as well as lost lunch-they had tracked him for over a kilometer before finally springing their trap. Barely had he begun to wonder at the dearth of Kashyyyk's dangerous undergrowth dwellers in his vicinity than five of the giant weavers had suddenly converged on him at once, swinging on thick strands of web with mandibles raised and dripping poison. He had barely survived the ambush.
Krayt one-shotted all the rakghouls when he was being ambushed by them yet Failen was too weak to do that against spiders.
- Spoiler:
Failen's telekinesis and force lightning did hardly anything to a large rancor while he was on a dark side nexus.
The Force Unleashed wrote:When he tried tipping it over with the Force, it simply roared at him in annoyance. Sith lightning glanced off its armored hide like water.
Remulus Dreypa could destroy chunks of buildings with his lightning.
- Spoiler:
Vaylin was able to tear apart a large building and use its chunks as missiles.
Failen said he could slice the rancor with his lightsaber for years and it'd do no damage.
The Force Unleashed wrote:He could slash at it with his lightsaber for years and have no effect.
Exar Kun was able to slice through a wall of Mandalorian Iron.
- Spoiler:
Failen has to change his lightsaber form to one Maris is unfamiliar with in order to beat her.
This was similar to what Blademaster Kas'im did during his fight against Bane. Only difference is that he has an excuse since PoD Bane is a decent opponent. Maris is fodder. The Force Unleashed wrote:Blocking Maris Brood's spinning strikes, he changed from the staid form of Soresu into the more aggressive Juyo favored by the dark side. Maris noticed the shift in his fighting style but, having only been trained in Jedi methods, failed to understand what it meant. She continued attacking with increasing desperation, even as he began to drive her back across the mounds of bones, past the body of her giant pet and away from Senator Organa. Her breathing became hard and her moves less focused. Fear began to dominate the wild look in her eyes. She was close to losing her concentration entirely.
Once again, Failen's lightning does hardly anything.
- Spoiler:
Failen is barely able to control a falling star destroyer and PROXY doesn't even know how he survived.
- Spoiler:
Tulak Hord can successfully pull ships from the sky.
The Old Republic wrote:The great Tulak Hord once pulled a ship this size from the sky.
For reference:
Failen nearly gets disarmed by Vader.
The Force Unleashed wrote:A simple double stroke, up and then down, it contained enough power to jar his wrists and shoulders and very nearly disarm him completely.
Vader was holding back during that moment.
The Force Unleashed wrote:The apprentice understood that, until this moment, they had never truly fought as equals. His Master had either held back, or he himself had capitulated.
Failen knew he couldn't defeat Vader in a lightsaber duel and had to use the environment to his advantage.
The Force Unleashed wrote:Where Darth Vader was strong and relentless, he was fast and sly. And there were ways to fight that didn't involve lightsabers. Loose objects, accelerated to killing speeds by the Force, became projectiles that converged from all directions. Invisible fists clutched for throats or punched with the power of pile drivers. Floors tipped underfoot; severed beams stabbed like javelins; overloaded circuits exploded.
Failen knows he's outmatched and tries to break Vader's concentration.
The Force Unleashed wrote:"I understand you now," he said, still trying to goad his former Master into breaking his concentration.
Failen gets knocked back by Vader's strikes.
The Force Unleashed wrote:The apprentice fell back under the rain of blows.
Failen had to use lightning to break the momentum of the fight, else he would've lost his breath.
The Force Unleashed wrote:Reaching out with his left hand, he blasted his Master with Sith lightning, broke the momentum of the furious onslaught, enabling him to stand and catch his breath.
Failen was almost ragdolled by Vader.
The Force Unleashed wrote:"You can teach me nothing," Darth Vader's leaden voice intoned. One black glove clenched, and for a moment the apprentice's throat closed tight.
Failen's force push on Vader did nothing.
The Force Unleashed wrote:He beat back the telekinetic attack with one of his own, shoving his Master in the chest with the force of a small explosion, throwing Darth Vader backward across the room. For all his size and occasional clumsiness, the Dark Lord was sure on his feet. He landed upright and launched himself back into the fray.
Vader is implied to have been more powerful than Failen during most of the fight.
The Force Unleashed wrote:Vader prepared for combat again. His power over the apprentice, however, was gone.
Failen was right after all. He had to use the environment to defeat Vader.
The Force Unleashed wrote:His lightsaber went skittering and sparking across the floor, twisted out of his grip by telekinesis. The Force wrenched him into the air, as he had once lifted the apprentice's father, and a barrage of missiles struck at him with increasing strength. He raised his gloved hands to defend himself, but the battery until, with a crash, the apprentice ripped the energy field generator in the center of the room right out of the floor and hurled it at his former Master.
This version of Vader is sub Ben Kenobi
Star Wars Art Treasures 26 wrote:At first, Lucas and the writers debated whether it was appropriate for Vader to resort to these "tricks" and if viewers wouldn't wonder why he hadn't used them during his duel with Obi-Wan on the Death Star, but immediately arose the simple explanation that Obi-Wan was more powerful than Vader so it would have proved useless.
Failen tries to strike Palpatine from above but gets hit by his lightning and falls.
- Spoiler:
Failen's suicide blast does nothing to Palpatine except create holes in his robe.
- Spoiler:
What makes this worse is that Failen was in oneness during the suicide blast.
The Force Unleashed wrote:No!" the apprentice cried, dropping his defenses to strike one last time at the Imperials. Energy surged through him. He felt as though a star had blazed to life in his chest. Driven by concern for his friends rather than himself, he embraced the Force completely, utterly, and was rewarded with strength that made his efforts with the dark side look like those of a child. His nerves were on fire. Streamers of light radiated from his skin. His bones glowed like radiant lava.
Failen was said to be no match for Palpatine multiple times.
Failen is confirmed to be weaker than his clone (who will be the subject of the next disrespect thread).
Credit to @Vaelias for finding some of these scansOnce I found out that Starkiller was coming back stronger, deadlier, and with more to lose than before, I knew I had to write it. His journey has become much more interesting.
Thanks for reading!

This thread... LMAO...
An impressive connection of various dots from a much wider perspective. The effort is much appreciated.
This work should be on YouTube, if not already.
Novels and Comics offer a much realistic take on both Galen Marek and Starkiller in comparison to the games.
I also learned that Master Obi-Wan Kenobi was more powerful than Darth Vader when the two fought on Death Star and this was the reason why Darth Vader was unable to affect him with his Telekinetics. I pointed out as much in a recent debate: https://www.suspectinsightforums.com/t4056p25-vaylin-runs-the-skywalker-gauntlet
I am also of the view that Galen Marek applied Dun Möch to great effect against Darth Vader as well as capitalized on the environment around him to his advantage to overwhelm him in a duel on Death Star: https://www.suspectinsightforums.com/t3609p25-darth-malgus-vs-count-dooku?nid=2#69606
Darth Vader had the time and capacity to grow from Episode 4 to Episode 6 - a span of 4 years in total.
Characters are not necessarily at their best game all the time either - a mix of HIGHS and LOWS is expected on average.
Another important consideration is that some of the feats are not possible to replicate against all manner of technologies and constructs and in all manner of environments - Star Wars is a lore of mixed realities and some of its best and most exotic stuff is/was ancient in origin but galactic warfare ruined much through the ages.

No I won’t make one on suited Vader. He’s another character that’s fun to lowball tho there’s too much content to cover. I’ll update this thread to include a section on the Starkiller clone once I’ve finished my exams.

Btw you should add this to the disrespect thread. The fact that Teneb Kel as a Sith Apprentice could one-shot a Terrentatek, whereas Failen Marek couldn't on Felucia against a Rancor. This version of Teneb Kel was vastly sub-Darth Marr.

Though, to be honest, his only good feats were on a nexus (I can't remember if the Rancor stomp was nexus amped either).

Nah a big fish isn’t rly a big fish in this case. He lost to pre-prime Bane and prime Bane is buried under a ridiculous amount of scaling. Sure he stood out in his era but his era was weak as shit and even Bane and Zannah would just be random force users if you placed them into the PT.
