I would throw Vader on there as the Vader persona, it's basically the antithesis of good designed to distract from self pity and pain

Even then, he had the potential for good.

He ended up sacrificing himself to save his son. And he loved Padmé in the past.

You really just want to fangasm over Vader.

Which argument would you prefer to contest; Luke saying "I feel the good in you, the conflict," Padmé saying on her deathbed "There is still good in [Anakin]," or the line from the RotS novel saying "There was no Vader. There was only you. Is you. You did it. You killed her"?

Because the idea of separating the Vader persona from Anakin is making a mask that literally has no character/person behind it, no one with any personality, good or evil.

No, ROTS leads into Dark Lord where he rejects responsibility and rejects his Anakin reality he buries himself in the extinction of the jedi and casually commits genocide and child murder multiple times. Vader is not seperate from Anakin in a classic sense, Vader exists because of Anakin being unable to accept what has happened.

And no, this isn't a fangasm, this is some dumb kid on the internet correcting me on a subject I know far more about.

Anyway, weird restrictions aside:

By this logic:

Hitler wasn't evil because he cared about his dog.
Mengele wasn't evil because he had a wife and son.
Stalin wasn't evil because he loved his second wife.
Jimmy Savile wasn't evil because he helped out at charity events.

Not that they weren't evil; they just weren't pure evil.

While there are other evils, the most potent evil is hatred, and possibly love exclusively for oneself.

And, in truth, they tend to go hand-in-hand with most of these characters.

That doesn't even make sense. A being can still be full of hatred (i.e. Hitler for Jews, blacks, gays, disabled people, etc) and still have some weird form of love (for his dog). 

The OP isn't asking us to provide characters who have absolutely no positive traits, just characters who are "profoundly immoral or wicked". All of the aforementioned characters tick that box.

Also, Sidious showed some kind of empathy for Vader on Mustafar. Does that make him not evil?

The desire for others to suffer is objectively evil.


I'm not saying Hitler's love for his dog makes him GOOD; I'm saying he could be worse if he hated the dog and tortured it.

That doesn't detract from Hitler's nature as an evil person. Desiring pain and death makes you an evil person according to the majority of people. Just because Hitler cared about his dog doesn't take away that he was incredibly evil. You're hypothesising that "pure evil" exists, when every being - even Star Wars characters like Sidious - have the potential for good or can be argued to have positive traits (e.g. Sidious preparing for the Yuuzhan Vong invasion and showing compassion to Vader after Mustafar). Even the most evil people believe that they are good and are doing the right thing. 

The world doesn't work by going "well Hitler wasn't pure evil because he liked dogs." It works by saying "Jimmy Savile was a monster who sexually assaulted, abused and traumatised over 1,000 young girls and boys while in a position of trust. Just because he helped out at charity events doesn't offset that he was an incredibly evil man", or "Hitler tried to commit genocide against innocent people who were doing nothing to him or harming society as a whole. He was a monster."

There can be people who only value their own well-being, and also want to see how much harm and suffering they can get away with causing.

Actions and people may not be 100% good or evil in real life, but the emotions that drive them are. The emotion that is most evil in my opinion is hatred, and therefore, how evil someone is can be gauged by how much they hate other people.

Or find pleasure in making them suffer.
