Did Palpatine have any redeeming qualities?
December 26th 2019, 10:59 am
Did Palpatine have any positive virtues (e.g. compassion, selflessness, empathy, etc.) at any point in his life? For example, before he became Plagueis' apprentice, or later in his life? Or was he destined to become evil?

Ian said Palpatine may have experienced a flash of empathy when touching Anakin’s forehead on Mustafar but that that was it.

I mean he appreciates art and some activities but that's it. He is the evil incarnate.

Wasn't there something about when he was a child, that he wanted to be a speeder bike racer or something like that?

As I recall he was always a sociopath, hit someone with a speeder bike etc. But the constant abuse from his adoptive father the degradation he recieved made him even more cold to the world and thus with a little prodding from plaguies he snapped and unleashed his full built up resentment. After that, he seemed to dedicate himself fully to sith teachings. He truly followed the sith religion, but I wouldn't say he started out evil so to speak. Young palpatine was really a scholar, and while he always had an affinity for the darkside and evil, it was mostly his parents constant abuse and degrading that ended up being the catalyst for his turn. I think sheev could have been a healthy human being who struggled with empathy and kept dark thoughts had he not been prodded so much in his youth.

Considering that Kit reacted to him and held his own for a brief time, it's clearly hyperbole. If you're 500 times faster than someone, then they have absolutely zero chance of reacting to you.

Or maybe Kit reacted to him because Sheev let him...

Ian's talked with George, read the script, and seen the movie. Either his IQ is sub-60 or he's exaggerating Palpatine's speed for effect.
I think you might underestimate how often people use hyperbole in daily speech.

And what did George say to him? We don't know enough to conclude whether he's sub-60 IQ or exaggerating. If we're using his words as evidence, however, I don't treat them any differently from how I interpret sourcebooks. Vernacular has no place here.

Well, if Ian's words are permissible, then so should the rest of the movie crew's. Going by them, Sheev deliberately lets his enemies think they're getting the better of him - he lures you into a false sense of security and then strikes. So it's very possible Sidious was moving just fast enough to be able to blitz Tiin and Kolar but allow Fisto to block a few of his strikes to let Mace think he wasn't any more powerful than that. But in reality he's 500 times as fast as anyone else.

We know that isn't the case, though. Mcdiarmid is prone to hyperbole, that much is obvious. His analysis of Sidious' fighting style is helpful, but not an authority when taken independently.
