Was Savage Opress a Mary Sue?
October 21st 2019, 7:01 am
Someone on Comic Vine said that Savage was the original Rey that no one complained about and that his skill level is inconsistent and contradicts the wider lore.

Savage:
-Has Maul-esque Force potential
-Trained as a warrior his entire life
-Was alchemically enhanced and mentally warped into a dark side monster
-Received Sith training to the point he mastered the saberstaff, achieved a "crude mastery of the Force" and was considered a true Sith who could break the Rule of Two by OOU sources
Yes, he rose to prominence in what seemed like a short time, but all the groundwork was laid for him and he was basically given Force steroids + a crash course in Banite Sith training. Also, he can't be a Mary Sue because he is neither female nor lacking in realistic weaknesses (his lack of training opens him up to things like lightning or being disarmed/tripped up). But if the essence of your question is "can we justify Savage growing in power so quickly", again, I think the answer to that is yes.
Also, it's kind of funny how Savage is considered a mindless brute who loses to Plo Koon but simultaneously a Mary Sue.

No, he's not a Mary Sue because he's not female.

You mean a "Gary Stu", and no, he's not.

Well, I don't think the term serves a character with Savage's role. For me, a Mary Sue is less externally related and more related to a character having no want vs need. Savage has some level of internal conflict, but his characterization is pretty sparse, so I would hesitate to label him with that title.

the term mary sue describes a character who is hyper good at everything, who has no flaws or obstacles to go through.
Savage doesn't fall under that description, therefore he isn't a mary sue. Quite simple.
