Darth Maul (TPM) vs Prime Qui-Gon Jinn
February 20th 2020, 3:46 pm
TPM Qui-Gon is stated to be slightly past his prime:
How well would would prime Qui-Gon do against TPM Maul? Duel takes place in Meatpants house/accommodation. Asides from that, standard conditions.
"Jedi Master Jinn possesses strong features and a piercing gaze. Powerfully built and speaking in a grave and determined voice, he has a very intimidating presence. He wears his long hair tied back so as not to obstruct his peripheral vision. Although a little past his prime, he remains a powerful warrior and a very active Jedi Knight." -- StarWars.com: Qui-Gon Jinn (Archived)

Although a little past his prime
His stamina, strength, etc has started to ebb, but not by too much. Maul still beats him.

Maul was more than a little better than Jinn

Has Jinn been implied to have the potential to grow much further than he reached at the point of his death had he survived?

Kenobi has seen Jinn in his prime and still says he is fighting better than he ever had vs Maul.
Jinn dies even more throughly this time.

That probably means that Maul was so good that Qui-Gon exerted himself more than he has in his life.HeartoftheForce wrote:Kenobi has seen Jinn in his prime and still says he is fighting better than he ever had vs Maul.

Maul, no difference really.
Qui-Gon can contend in augmentation and skill with his opponent, but lacks the sufficient Force reserves and raw power to keep himself in the fight.

Is there that quote that says Qui-Gon was equally as skilled as Maul, or is that quote outdated?

The way force users work is that as they age they reduce in physicality but increase through the force. Qui gun's quote says he is "a little past his prime" but in the same sentence goes on to note "he remains a powerful warrior" this leads me to the conclusion that while his physicals deteriorated his force abilities grew hence the emphasis on him remaining "a powerful warrior", which means he wouldn't be post prime because even though he is old his aug and power from that would make up for any physical restrictions

This is a convoluted intepretation. The reference to Qui-Gon being past his prime is in the same sentence that says he "remains a powerful warrior and very active Jedi Knight," indicating that TPM Qui-Gon is formidable. but post-prime as a combatant by a tiny margin.

This is true, at least in canon:
"It's the first big lightsaber duel of the new trilogy, and it doesn't disappoint. The first time Qui-Gon Jinn faced off against Darth Maul, the Jedi Master looked hopelessly out of his depth, so it's no surprise that he's better prepared when he and Obi-Wan meet in the hangar on Naboo." -- The Best of Star Wars Insider Volume 5: Lords of the Sith.

Maul is still better in every category. Still "more than his equal in weapons training", still a better acrobatic, still better all around physicals, still more powerful. Increased speed, mobility, and stamina wouldn't go amiss obviously but we're not exactly splitting hairs here. Maul is still a level above Jinn.

I'll say this though, if Jinn is meant to be a 6 or 7 and Maul an 8 according to Gillard, the "huge gaps within tiers" clearly aren't that huge outside of the scale itself. For my money Jinn is marginally but not hopelessly inferior to Maul in every way, barring a couple distinct edges he has. Maul is better, just not by a huge amount.

Jinn was confirmed to be a 7 by Gillard when he got emailed by MeatPants.
