Wasn’t Dark Rendezvous a last minute thing? They were going to write a Shaak Ti novel whose name I can’t remember, but it got cancelled b/c it was terrible.

No it was for a different reason. George Lucas usually didn’t allow to write anything focusing on Yoda because it could have revealed something about his past, which he didn’t want the authors to explore. the novel was created anyway but they did not expect Lucas to accept it. When he did, the novel that should have come out instead (which was the Shaak ti one, called “escape from Dagu”) was replaced with the Yoda one, likely for marketing reasons.
