Important Things To Note
- Clip compilation video:
The video below is a compilation of relevant scenes from the ewok's cartoon for this thread. If i put add timestamp which is in red (i.e 0:43) that means to refer back the to the video, you can also find some timestamps in the video description.
- Foreign Sticker Book Validity:
- Throughout this thread i will use statements from a sticker book printed in spain, yugoslavia and france. The translations are done with an online tool and sometimes aren't the best but its the best i have, and either way none of the statements bring much new but more simply just strengthen ideas that is already shown in the show and other sources. below is the licensing from one of these stickers.
- Magic = The Force:
- Throughout lots of these statements and feats the force in endor is referred to as "magic" but to clear up some confusion i will show some quotes which all prove that this "magic" is actually just the force.Castaways Of Endor wrote:"As a species, Gupins are highly sensitive to the living Force, a trait which appears to be linked to their shapeshifting. A Gupin may ask others to "draw out the energy in your minds and hold it firm" before he casts a shape, and this attention from other living beings seems to ease the transformation. In addition, a Force relic resting in a vessel called the Juniper Chest has become the centerpiece of Gupin life. The relic apparently amplifies the Gupins' natural morphic abilities. The Gupins have developed a host of unnecessary rituals surrounding the Juniper Chest, including a ceremony known as the Time of Renewal and a supposed "magical" key that opens the chest. "Castaways Of Endor wrote:The Force is strong on Endor. The Forest Moon is rich in life, and those with a sensitivity for the energies of living thingscan wield the powers of wizards. Because the disciplines of the Jedi Order have never been introduced here, the locals have developed superfluous, totemic trappings surrounding their use of the Force. Ewok shamanism, Dulok sorcery, and Gupin magic may employ different talismans and charms, but beneath the paraphernalia they are essentially the same. Endor's totem magic is complicated by the presence of Force-magnifying artifacts found across the moon. Similar relics have been known for millennia--Sith amulets, for example, or the Kaiburr crystal of Mimban--and Endor is rumored to hold Force artifacts including the sunstar gem, the shadowstone, and the season scepter. "Castaways Of Endor wrote:Dulok tribes are headed by a chief, with a revered shaman or medicine man offering advice. The shaman is often strong with the living Force and capable of great "magic."Charal In The Databank wrote:The evil Charal was a Force-wielding NightsisterFrom Wicket to the Duloks: Revisiting the Star Wars: Ewoks Animated Series on Starwars.com wrote:his affinity for magic allowed him to become the apprentice of Logray, the Ewok shaman. His magic rarely had the desired effect, but it was able to save the day on more than one occasionJedi Vs Sith: The Essential Guide To The Force wrote:Today the planet Tund in the Outer Rim is an uninhabited, irradiated wasteland, but for thousands of years the once lush world was home to a group of Force-users known as the Sorcerers of Tund. The Sorcerers saw their abilities as a kind of magic, and presented themselves to the galaxy at large as powerful wizards. The Jedi Order was long aware of the sorcerers’ existence, and recognized their field of study as training in the Force.
Luke had learned of Ossus from the Tedryn Holocron, which identified the planet as a center of Jedi learning for thousands of years. Shortly after Luke and Kam arrived on Ossus, the Ysanna attempted to defend their world by attacking with projectile weapons that were enhanced through weak implementation of the Force. Over the course of generations, the Ysanna forgot their Jedi heritage and used their latent Force abilities as a form of atavistic magic. But when the Ysanna realized that Luke was a Jedi Master and understood his reasons for traveling to Ossus, they yielded and welcomed himPaul dini in an interview on radiofreesacremento wrote:The Ewoks have a sort of spiritual bond with their trees – all having to do with The Force and its various manifestations throughout the universe. From The Trees In The Living Force Campaign wrote:Xinishia discovered an ancient dark side artifact while exploring a remote and inaccessible passage in Cloud Mountain. The dark side artifact allows the controller to enhance her Force abilities by drawing power from occupants of the device (willing or not). This permits effects well beyond the ability of an individual Force user.
- Ewok Cartoon Canon Authority:
- The ewok's cartoon should also be slightly higher than C-canon due to Lucas's direct involvement and overseeing of the entire project.Miki Herman in an interview on radiofreesacremento wrote:Yes, that’s right. George Lucas wanted a show for all ages, just like the Star Wars films. Our goal was to have a higher quality of animation than the usual Saturday morning standards. George also felt that it was important to address the everyday family aspect of the characters, even though there were magical, fantasy qualities present.Paul dini in an interview on radiofreesacremento wrote:So I moved up there and became associate producer and story editor on Ewoks and Droids and I did the development for Ewoks (based on lengthy meetings with George Lucas)foxhome.com wrote:Join in the fun and adventures of your friends from Star Wars, the Ewoks and the Droids. Lucas: Unfortunately, that show was cancelled, and I don't know if we will get it back on the air.
- Sunstar Vs Shadowstone:
- In the ewok's cartoon there exists 3 different forms of the Sunstar-Shadowstone (which is the proper name of the sunstar)
1: The Sunstar: This is the good side of the Sunstar-Shadowstone and contains half the powers of the combined sunstar-shadowstone
2: The Shadowstone: This is the evil side of the Sunstar-Shadowstone and contains half the powers of the combined sunstar-shadowstone
3: The Sunstar-Shadowstone: This is the Sunstar And the Shadowstone fused together into the true stone. This is what this article mainly covers and unless noted otherwise all mentions of the Sunstar are in reference to this, this is also the stone that Logray has for the rest of the series after the season 1 episode "Sunstar Vs Shadowstone" after this episode the Sunstar-shadowstone is also simply called the "sunstar" for the rest of the series. I would recommend watching the entirety of this episode to better understand it but i will also post some quotes which summarize it incase you dont have the time or dont want to watch the episode. From Wicket to the Duloks: Revisiting the Star Wars: Ewoks Animated Series on Starwars.com wrote:Logray was the wise Ewok shaman and wizard. As a young warrior, he had been taken captive by Morag, an evil witch. By serving her, Logray learned her magic secrets and became a powerful wizard aided by the properties of the Sunstar, a magical artifact. Logray allowed Teebo to become his new apprentice after his former pupil turned evilOne of the most dangerous adversaries the Ewoks ever faced was Morag, the evil Tulgah witch who resided in Mount Thunderstorm, a dormant volcano. When she learned that the Ewoks possessed the Sunstar/Shadowstone, she managed to steal it from the village. But Logray, who had been taken captive by Morag as a servant, learned her magic spells and was able to split the artifact in two — Logray got the Sunstar and Morag received the Shadowstone. Morag continuously tried to destroy the Ewoks and steal the Sunstar. Right before she perished, she succeeded in combining the power of the stones once again. This power totally corrupted Morag and she transformed into a lava monster that was defeated by Logray. In the end, the Ewoks retrieved the Sunstar/Shadowstone, though they would continue to call it the Sunstar.Logray in Night of the Stranger wrote:Careful Wicket! Scaling
- Dr Raygar's Age And Limitless Claim:
- Dr raygar making the claim that the gem has virtually limitless power is actually very telling on the power of the sunstar, as seeming as the sunstar is a force artifact the only logical way to gauge its power would be via checking the midichlorian count of the sunstar.Dr. Raygar In Battle for the Sunstar wrote:Incredible, the gem’s powers are virtually without limit. In fact, why should I hand it over to the Emperor when I can use it to become Emperor myselfCastaways Of Endor wrote:Similar relics have been known for millennia--Sith amulets, for example, or the Kaiburr crystal of Mimban--and Endor is rumored to hold Force artifacts including the sunstar gem, the shadowstone, and the season scepterFrom The Trees In The Living Force Campaign wrote:Xinishia discovered an ancient dark side artifact while exploring a remote and inaccessible passage in Cloud Mountain. And despite the empire's censorship of the existence of midichlorians we know that dr raygar was alive during the time of the republic based on him being at the Wolhanian expedition, which in Star Wars Complete Locations we see happened sometime before ROTS, this was a time where midichlorians was such common knowledge that there was gambling games about it. Also someone with the political power to divert star destroyers and who is specifically looking for force artifacts would likely know what midichlorians are.Death in the slave pits of lorrd wrote:And there was another mystery: control of the excavations had recently been taken from Lorrdian archaeologists and given to an Argazdan scientist named Raygar. Uncle Hoole knew Raygar by reputation. The archaeologist had been involved in the Wolhanian expedition to Yavin, but now lacked the support of any reputable university or museum and was obsessed with locating mystical artifacts. So what was Raygar expecting to find in the Pits, and how did he manage to take control of the most important archaeological site on Lorrd?HoloNet News Vol. 531 50 wrote:Much like its successful smashball, bolo-ball, and Podracing chips, each Spotts Jedi tradechip can generate a small holo-representation of a particular Jedi Knight and display biographical information and statistics including planet of origin, confirmed kills and midi-chlorian count
This means that Dr Raygar highly likely analyzed the midichlorian count and likely found a number higher than anything he had ever seen.
- Planet Buster:
- There is several statements and feats backing up that the sunstar has a minimum the power to destroy a planet, this section will cover each of these.
- 1: Blatant/Obvious Statements/Feats:
When the duchess of sleet thinks she can destroy a planetDuchess of Sleet in The Season Scepter wrote:What shall I do with the Sunstar, make a necklace? Destroy a planet?
When its stated to be able to turn endor into mud
When it moves 2 separate moons at once. (5:32) (3:40)
- 2: Other Statements/Feats:
- In the season 1 episode 6 episode "tree of light" we are introduced to a tree on endor which channels something called "the light spriit" this light spirit keeps the "night spirit" from killing functionally all life on endor. But in order for this tree to survive the ewoks need to heal it. We directly see the consequences of not healing the tree in the show and other sources, which is the death of everything on endor, but when the tree is healed everything is revived and undergoes a "genesis effect" (2:57)Chief Chirpa in tree of light wrote:these dark winds show that our tree of light is fading fast, if it should perish, the evil night spirit would gain much powerEwok in the databank wrote:from the legends of the Tree of Light said to control the life energy of the Endor forests
So basically what we are seeing is the night spirit which can wipe all life from a planet and the light spirit which can revive all life from a planet.
Now the sunstar directly has the power of both of these forces but i am not going to explain why until the other section titled "The Night Spirit And The Light Spirit" (i am splitting it up to avoid confusion for that section, but sorry for the confusion here, but for now just take my word)
In season 2 episode 13 "the season scepter" we learn of a force artifact known as the season scepter which can completely change the season and freeze all of endor. (0:58)Castaways Of Endor wrote:Endor's totem magic is complicated by the presence of Force-magnifying artifacts found across the moon. Similar relics have been known for millennia--Sith amulets, for example, or the Kaiburr crystal of Mimban--and Endor is rumored to hold Force artifacts including the sunstar gem, the shadowstone, and the season scepter.
So when logray says that the sunstar is the most powerful magic he knows of (which includes the season scepter 2:43) it creates another solid case for sunstar being a planet buster, the characters in the show also back this sunstar>season scepter logic as seen when the duchess of sleet's entire plan of freezing endor was to capture the sunstar (0:58)Logray in the season scepter wrote:Something must have happened to the season scepter! The Leaf Queen in the season scepter wrote:Logray! Come quickly, you must save us from these snowsEwok in the databank wrote:to the god-like beings that control Endor's seasons through the mystical Season Scepter.Logray in Night of the Stranger wrote:Careful Wicket! You know the Sunstar can unleash the most powerful magic in the universe. For good and evil
When Dr Raygar says that he can create the most powerful weapon the galaxy with the sunstar (0:45), this statement takes place in 3ABY which means that the first death star has already happened and the 2nd is well underway over endor (which is where raygar says this aswell) so raygar highly likely knows at minimum that the death star exists and likely its destructive powers, but still thinks the sunstar is superior.Essential Guide To Warfare wrote:But before Luke Skywalker fired his torpedoes, Emperor Palpatine had ordered the creation of new superlaser weapons. Hyperspace tugs and threadships were extending an obscure hyperspace route called the Silvestri Trace from its origin near Sullust all the way to Endor, on the galactic frontier. There, a second, more powerful Death Star was in the initial stages of construction.
- Superiority to the empire:
- The sunstars direct superiority to the entire might of empire is backed by a wide variety of sources including characters in-universe which all say that via the sunstar one can overthrow palpatine and become the "master of the universe"Dr. Raygar In Battle for the Sunstar wrote:Incredible, the gem’s powers are virtually without limit. In fact, why should I hand it over to the Emperor when I can use it to become Emperor myselfDr Raygar In Battle for The Sunstar wrote:Do not worry admiral, soon the entire galaxy will feel the power of the Sunstar
- The Great Spirit, The Light Spirit And The Night Spirit:
- The Night Spirit And The Tree Of Light:
- On endor exists 2 different entities referred to as the "night spirit" and the "light spirit (also refereed to as the tree of light)" (i talked a bit about them in the planet buster section earlier) these 2 spirits are shown to be the light and dark sides of the force respectivleyChief Chirpa in tree of light wrote:these dark winds show that our tree of light is fading fast, if it should perish, the evil night spirit would gain much powercreatures of endor on starwars.com wrote:"Night Spirit, an evil force that controls the cold dark nights of Endor"Insider 74 wrote:"the coming of the terrible night spirit"Endor in the databank wrote:The silvery gas giant is occasionally eclipsed by the winged silhouette of a mantigrue, a harbinger of the evil Night Spirit in Ewok lore.Ewok in the databank wrote:Night Spirit, an evil entity feared by the EwoksEwok in the databank wrote:from the legends of the Tree of Light said to control the life energy of the Endor forests
So what we have are the light and dark sides fighting over control of endor. And the sunstar directly channels this power, we know this for a variety of reasons, including (0:00) where the dulok shaman (who is powerful in the living force) calls morag the "queen of the night spirit" while she has the shadowstone in her possession, the sunstar the shadowstones dynamic of good/evil also mirrors what we see with the night and light spirits. From Wicket to the Duloks: Revisiting the Star Wars: Ewoks Animated Series on Starwars.com wrote:Logray was the wise Ewok shaman and wizard. As a young warrior, he had been taken captive by Morag, an evil witch. Also the night spirits own manifestation as creatures known as "wizards of the night spirit" require the power of the sunstar to free them and the sunstar is "the only thing that can do this" (3:20)
And the use of tree of light and the sunstar. Night spirit and shadowstone is likely another connection, especially seeming as the night spirit directly has control over night timeCreatures of endor on starwars.com wrote:the Night Spirit, an evil force that controls the cold dark nights of Endor.
- The Great Spirit:
- If you havent read the Light And Night Spirit sections above i would suggest reading that first.
A variety of sources all talk about the Father Tree/Great Tree/Spirit Tree and all of them suggest the exact same thing, that this tree is the source of all life/the force in the universe and is as old or maybe older then endor itself.Ewok in the databank wrote:Ewok spiritualism has a wide pantheon of gods and spirits. The foremost being the Great Tree, a sacred tree from which all life springs. From the Great Tree comes the Great Spirit, an omniscient god which watches over the forestROTJ Novelization wrote:Threepio translated for his friends: “Honorable Elders, we have this night received a perilous, wondrous gift. The gift of freedom. This golden god …”—here Threepio paused in his translation just long enough to savor the moment; then went on—“… This golden god, whose return to us has been prophesied since the First Tree, tells us now he will not be our Master, tells us we are free to choose as we will—that we must choose; as all living things must choose their own destiny. He has come, Honorable Elders, and he will go; no longer may we be slaves to his divine guidance. We are free.
“Yet how must we comport ourselves? Is an Ewok’s love of the wood any less because he can leave it? No—his love is more, because he can leave it, yet he stays. So is it with the voice of the Golden One: we can close our eyes; yet we listen.
“His friends tell us of a Force, a great living spirit, of which we are all part, even as the leaves are things separate yet part of the tree. We know this spirit, Honorable Elders, though we call it not the Force. The friends of the Golden One tell us this Force is in great jeopardy, here and everywhere. When the fire reaches the forest, who is safe? Not even the Great Tree of which all things are part; nor its leaves, nor its roots, nor its birds. All are in peril, forever and ever.
“It is a brave thing to confront such a fire, Honorable Elders. Many will die, that the forest lives on.
“But the Ewoks are brave.”
The little bear-creature fixed his gaze on the others in the hut. Not a word was spoken; nonetheless, the communication was intense. After a minute like this, he concluded his statement.
This is basically the closest place in Star Wars that we have to the birthplace of the force (apart from mortis but that is more of a conduit) and i think how i interpret this is basically that the night spirit is the son, the light spirit is the daughter and the great spirit is the father. But i also think that the great spirit likely created the sunstar as a way to tame and control the night and light spirits, similar to the mortis dagger.
A pretty easy point to make against this is the fact that if people like logray had the sunstar (which i am arguing may have father level power) then why arent they shown as so strong? and i think the answer is quite simple, we have actually seen proof that logray himself dosent even understand the full power of the sunstar and dosent think anyone can be the master of the sunstar. Which is why in shadows of endor he has to get charal's opinion on its power.
And when logray has a branch from the great tree he is able to completely manipulate the elements, but logray still considers the sunstar superior to this basically chunk of the force itself, further solidifying the sunstar = great tree argumentLogray in Night of the Stranger wrote:Careful Wicket! You know the Sunstar can unleash the most powerful magic in the universe. For good and evil
