Clearing up misconceptions: TPM Maul isn't averse to using the Force in a duel.
July 8th 2019, 1:35 pm
Short and sweet. TPM Maul isn't above using the Force in a duel. The quote claiming Maul prefers "the physical victory" has more to do with the fact he doesn't like to talk, in contrast to Vader and Dooku who like trash talking in a duel.
"Maul's utter devotion to Form VII's physical focus is telling: he remains silent during his battle with the Jedi on Tatooine and Naboo, desiring a purely physical victory instead of pursuing the "higher tradition of dun moch-domination of his opponent's spirit, which Sith typically achieve through taunts that expose inner doubts and weakness."
Maul actually uses the Force in battle more times than Jinn and Kenobi in TPM; first to levitate a piece of rubble to open the blast doors and another to incapacitate Kenobi. Think for a moment: do you really think the author of that quote who more than likely watched TPM in it's entirety meant Maul dislikes using the Force in combat even though he used it more than any other Force user in the film or do you think he meant he was averse to talking in a fight?
More over just a few months prior he had no issue using the Force against a bounty hunter:
Or against Darsha Assant
Conclusion Maul's not disinclined to use the Force in combat at all. It's not "out of character" for Maul to use the Force in the middle of combat nor is it against his MO to open up with the Force if it would give him an advantage.

Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter wrote:"Using his control of the Force, Darth Maul gripped the weapon in a dark tentacle of energy and hurled it at the bounty hunter's face, hard."
Or against Darsha Assant
The Sith apprentice launched a simultaneous attack, using the Force to throw a rusty power-wrench and a bucket of old fasteners from a worktable at her as he launched himself forward, lightsaber dancing a variant of a teras kasi Death Weave.
Conclusion Maul's not disinclined to use the Force in combat at all. It's not "out of character" for Maul to use the Force in the middle of combat nor is it against his MO to open up with the Force if it would give him an advantage.

Yeah, but he considers it desperate to do...
In Darth Maul shadow hunter when Darsha does it he says to himself she must be losing falling back on desperation tactics.
Of course he use it when he has to though, just not all the time.

His use of juyo also makes it difficult to use force attacks mid combat as well.

He's also a master of Niman a form that places a special emphasis on Force based counters.

Maul also uses TK against Kenobi in the script and novel mid combat.
