Luke destroys Palpatine (canon)
November 15th 2020, 12:41 pm
*Note: this is essentially just a "what-if" dream/vision sequence that Palpatine was able to pull from Vader's mind(during ESB), but I thought it was very well done nonetheless. It speaks to what Vader believed Luke may have been capable of with some proper [Sith] instruction.
Here is the complete chapter. It is definitely worth a read:

It also seems to imply that Palpatine believed Luke's potential = Anakin's:

Why is that a problem? He's his son.

Fun little chapter, but it doesn't really tell us much we didn't already know. Luke's potential has always been meant to be equal to Anakin's. George Lucas has said that many times over the years. The biggest revelation with this chapter was how Palpatine learned the truth about Luke. I always assumed he'd known almost right after the Death Star was destroyed, and was hiding it from Vader. We know Vader found out shortly after the Death Star was destroyed, and kept it to himself for three years. For Palpatine to learn the truth only during the events of ESB shows that Vader is far more capable of deceiving Palpatine than I initially assumed.

I had also assumed that Palpatine secretly knew that Luke was Vader's son the entire time, as that is what I had personally gathered from this scene:

But yeah, that is obviously not the case, as per this chapter, Palpatine had no clue who Luke was until he inserted himself in Vader's dream/vision during ESB. So huge props to Vader for being able to hide a revelation of that magnitude from Palpatine for a number of years.
It's also interesting if you read this chapter and then rewatch the original scene from ESB again:

Palpatine's "I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker" and "He could destroy us" lines takes on a whole new meaning with the aforementioned context.

Technically all Star Wars stories outside of the original six movies are fanfiction. They're fiction, written by fans. Also, let's not forget that this whole short story is literally Palpatine witnessing Vader's greatest fantasies. Of course Vader is going to fantasize about Luke killing Palpatine, getting his body back, building some unstoppable fleet, and getting Padme back. Even Palpatine seems to be having a laugh over how absurd the fantasy is.
