As I explained in the ANH thread, I have both a biased and unbiased rating of the originals. I'm going with the unbiased one here.

ESB being 8/10 for me means that it is simply a great movie, one in which I am glued to the screen the entire time and thoroughly invested in the story in a way I wouldn't be in most 7/10 movies. However, it doesn't necessarily make me think about any of its themes or philosophical messages long afterwards like a 9/10 movie would.

At least for me, a film does not have to have long-lasting films to achieve a higher rating than an 8, but I get where you are coming from.

My rankings are based on personal enjoyment, so if something brings me enjoyment even long after I've watched it, it will rank higher than something that I can only derive enjoyment of while watching.
