Star Wars movies tournament: The Phantom Menace
November 9th 2019, 2:40 pm
Decided to make a funny tournament between the Star Wars movies. I will summarize all the votes after each round. Each thread will be open for, I don't know, 3, maybe 4 days. I don't want to set any rules, since this is purely for fun.
We rate the movies, then I tally the votes into arithmetic average.
First round:
I'll also demonstrate how I personally see the scale, but it's obviously very personal.

First round:
Episode I - The Phantom Menace
I'll also demonstrate how I personally see the scale, but it's obviously very personal.
1/10 - absolutely terrible movie without any saving grace. Every aspect possible is just bad. There are no qualities in the movie, anything you can think of is subpar or straight up worst ever.
2/10 - extremely terrible, disgusting movie, a complete failure, although minor details can be okay, even if the movie in itself is one of the worst in history.
3/10 - bad movie. It may be very good in terms of technical aspects, the music, the effects, but with plot and writing being so terrible you cringe all the time, with literally nearly nothing making sense, but with visuals that are good to watch. Maybe it's the opposite, and plot is good on paper, but acting looks like done by random normies who never even saw the script. Maybe plot is good, and acting is okay, but terrible camera work make it so painful to watch for the eyes you pass.
4/10 - poor movie, but not tragic. Maybe it's overall subpar, with no real extreme downsides. Maybe it's pretty good in some aspects, but terribly sucks in some crucial thing so much it brings down the rest.
5/10 - as average as it gets.
6/10 - it's okay. Good thing to watch, it's fun, nothing to really recommend to others, but it's a good experience, even if nothing really interesting. As with other scales like that, maybe the story and acting is rather subpar, but epic visuals and music make it a good time to watch it. Maybe it's a good story, but told rather poorly. Maybe the worldbuilding is nice, and plot is just somewhere around.
7/10 - good movie overall. There is not a single thing you can call terrible and bottle-necking the entire movie, even if some aspects can be rather average or even subpar. Pros outweigh the cons by an insane amount though and there is not a moment of doubt it's a nice movie.
8/10 - great movie. Just that, great, great in every regard, the worst aspect of the movie is just above average, or maybe some plot holes or bad premise pull it down, but basically bad things are either just details, or some very basic aspects like the premise itself.
9/10 - fantastic, outstanding movie. It's just nearly perfect. Maybe some themes are not for your taste, some music themes are poor, one or two actors are subpar, but overall, it's insanely great movie nearing perfection.
10/10 - perfection in its genre.

5/10. This is the definition of a boring film for me. It had both positives and negatives, but they balanced each other out in a way which left me feeling nothing.

It's a trash movie, but a decent star wars movie.

Great movie. Great music, great setpieces, nuanced multilayered plotting a step up from the more linear OT plots, good high stakes drama without being overdone, nice fun family-friendly atmosphere that is missed in some the other movies, great performance by Liam Neeson and Ian McDirmand(his best in any movie IMO; charismatic, convincing as a well-meaning politician and menacing without being overly hammy, like he can tend to get in RotS). And although I loved the movie long before I was an EU fan, all the lore that comes with the movie: the Jedi Apprentice series, Darth Plagueis, Cloak of Deception, Shadow Hunter, the early 2000-2001 comics, and Journals really increased it's enjoyment value especially if you are reading and watching everything in chronological order.
As for the few things I disliked. Jake Lloyd can be a bit annoying and inconsistent (though tbf I find most boys his age to be annoying so it probably isn't his fault). I find him natural for the most part though he can be a bit wooden at times. He's convincing with his huttess, his relationship with Padme is cute, and he gives a great physical performance in the Pod Race(I'm always on the edge of my seat when I watch that) but he's a bit cringy in the Naboo Starfighter(Lucas should have had him keep his cool like he did in the Pod Race).
Also Anakin's mom shouldn't have remained a slave. It had no impact on the plot of AotC and it's nonsensical that the Jedi or Padme(who owes Anakin big) wouldn't free her after ten years. The drama of having to leave his mother for the order would have been enough to set the plot for AotC.

Jar Jar ruined the film for me. I know some people are now getting around to him, but I can't.
I also disliked how they handled young Anakin.

TPM gets a ridiculous amount of hate. Great final battle, music was amazing, it was interesting seeing what Anakin was like as a child and drawing the parallels between his kid self and the asthmatic demon he'd grow up to be, compelling characters, etc. Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd really didn't bother me that much. Binks wasn't completely awful as a character (if fairly annoying) but I genuinely enjoyed seeing young Anakin.
Plus, it introduced Qui-Gon Jinn (one of my favourite Jedi) and Ewan Mcgregor as Obi-Wan, which was absolutely the best casting decision they could have made.
I'll take it over it's sequel AOTC: The Talking Chronicles any day. If I had to rate it, I'd give it 6 or 7 out of 10. It's solidly behind ROTS, ESB or ROTJ for me, but still a very good film.

The awkward dialog and romance of the PT really aren't anymore so than most other family entertainment films of the same era. Sam Rami's Spiderman has just as much awkward dialog: compare "are you an angel?" to "Aunt May, Aunt May, is that an angel?". And the romance is just as lame even though they are both likeable as characters. The Harry Potter films likewise are full of awkward lines by modern-day standards and aside from Watson, the child actors are pretty wooden throughout even when they got older. And I'll take Anakin and Padme over Ron and Hermione and Ginny and Harry any day. Even Lord of the Rings has a lot of narmy moments and bad romance.

I agree with this, though at least we never got to hear Tobey say "Aunt May, Aunt May, is that an angel?"
The awkward danger and romance in the PT, at worst, is so bad it's good.

I think the issue is that Anakin and Padme have like little to no personality. Sure I won't mind the odd cheesy one liner as long as the characters are good and have likable personalities. In a franchise that George Lucas had always intended to be a children's fantasy tale, Anakin sure is lacking in terms of personality. He was basically a psycho throughout the whole of AOTC, which IMO was the wrong approach. He needed to strike that balance in making Anakin a legitimately good person, but also exploiting his inner weaknesses at the same time. I think TCW captured this perfectly.O-Siri wrote:The awkward dialog and romance of the PT really aren't anymore so than most other family entertainment films of the same era. Yeah Anakin was a psychotic creep who wanted to get in Padme’s pants.

I thought the beginning of RotS did an adequate job of capturing his heroic side. Sure it would have been nice to see more of that side but that's the limitations of standalone movies compared to the EU. I prefer the boyish, snarky and cocksure, and wannabe dashing hero the films and the pre-TCW EU portrayed. Hayden and Matt Wood are the real Anakin in my eyes. TCW tried too hard to force the "moralistic" side, so much he's borderline straightlaced and it's boring. Same issue I had with RotJ transformation of Han Solo. First two films he was a lovable dashing rogue with an attitude and then the last film they took all his exciting qualities and turned him into a placid good guy.SithSauce wrote:I think the issue is that Anakin and Padme have like little to no personality. This is after the deadline but I'd have voted a 6/10. It's difficult to pinpoint a number because it has some extreme highs (Duel of the Fates) and some pretty low lows (like just some boring stretches). IMHO it has too many flaws like poor pacing and some cringe dialogue to be above a 6, but too many iconic moments to be below a 5. What pushes it to a 6 and not a 5 is the worldbuilding, and the way that it opened up the Star Wars universe - indeed, that would push it even higher but I don't fully count that as part of the quality of the movie itself.
